Pride Parade Attendance in Chicago

Since 1985 the attendance of the annual Pride Parade has increased over the years with an estimated 1,000,000 in January of 2014.

Chicago’s first pride parade started on June 28 1970, a year after the Stonewall riots. The LGBT activists in Chicago had marched to remember the anniversary of the New York uprising and to show that they were not afraid to take a stand. Since then, it has been tradition for a parade to be held towards the last weekend of June. The graph shows the estimated amount of people that attended the parade throughout the years 1985 to 2014.

The graph shows the attendance of the pride parade started to increase steadily after 1985. The year 2013 was the highest attendance for the parade with an estimated amount of 1,000,000 in attendance, this is the same in the year 2014.

The attendance increase in 2013 was record breaking as a million people came to celebrate the 44th annual Pride Parade as well as celebrate the Supreme Court’s rulings which ended the Defense Against Marriage Act (DOMA) and restored marriage fairness in California.

The graph shows that in 2014 the attendance remained at a constant rate of 1 million people in attendance.
